Our Story
Our mission:
Reduce impact and increase insights

How Terrasense Started...

Jono first had the idea for Terrasense when he visited Matthew in the Greater Kruger National Park.

Here he had an inside look at working with wildlife and conservation and the difficulties they faced.

Jono tagged along for the monitoring of African Wild Dogs; whose collar would only ping once every 24hrs, to preserve the battery life.

The tags wouldn't last long, and still it would be hard to locate the dog with one location a day.

Also the tags were big, and the animal would have to be captured and sedated. This also was expensive and risky.

Jono could see the issues, and started to look for solutions. They needed more insights, less battery.
Eliminate the battery, keep the tracking capabilities and you would be able to have near real time updates on anything you tagged...
... and so Terrasense was born.
Project & Development Roadmap
Our Journey
We currently have 5 phases planned for Terrasense,
from prototype testing to large-scale deployment.

Phase 5
Data Security Platform & Interactive App
- Deliver gamified visitor experiences (e.g. Simba the lion’s story) - Delivery System for sensitive data (e.g. rhinos)

Phase 4
Prototype Development & Bio-adhesive Testing
- Refine core tech - Test adhesion methods - Validate antenna designs - Begin software and AI training - Ethical testing of remote tagging

Phase 3
Full-Scale Deployment
- Focus on high-risk poaching zones - Expand to agriculture and ecosystem research

Phase 2
Scaling & Multi-Species Expansion
- Expand to other animals - Putting each animals needs first - Sell kits online - Install receiver networks

Phase 1
- Field test with Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre - Deploy tags on pangolins - Benchmark against current tags - Other Pangolin Rehabs to follow
Mission Statement
Our Mission Statement is simple:
Reduce impact, Increase Insight
